Community groups go solar

Our friends at Powershop have launched a fantastic initiative to help community organisations fund solar installations. For those of you not familiar with how Powershop works, customers can purchase powerpacks to cover the costs of the energy (kWh) they’ve used during their billing period and the daily supply charge. Powershop has created a new powerpack to generate funds to support community organisations. It is called Your Community Energy. This Powerpack has a 6.6c/kWh (incl. GST) premium included. The premium amount (excl. GST) is then distributed to community energy projects in Australia. Under this initiative Powershop customers pay a few cents extra per unit of power and this money is used to fund solar for not-for-profit or charitable organisations.

One local group supported through this program is Milparinka on Albert Street, Brunswick. Milparinka supports people who have a disability to pursue lifestyles that include the same opportunities that all members of the community expect and enjoy. Positive Charge and our parent organisation the Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd (MEFL) assisted Milparinka in obtaining quotes and deciding on the best system to suit their needs. We were then able to recommend Milparinka as a recipient for $10,000 from Powershop’s community energy fund.

The results

This funding helped Milparinka install a 23kW solar PV system on their Brunswick centre. The system will save Milparinka over $4,000 each year and reduce their CO2 emissions by almost 40,000kg annually.

The great news is that Powershop expect to raise enough money through this initiative to fund a lot more projects, so if you know of a community group that is interested in reducing their costs through solar then get in touch with Positive Charge by emailing
